Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

Christian McBride and Inside Straight (NYC)
modern jazz

Philadelphia bassist Christian McBride rose to prominence in the mid 90’s as young talent with a big sound and a versatile skill set. After graduating from Julliard he got a start working with Bobby Watson and Freddie Hubbard. He stuck closely to main- stream bop work and toured with the Benny Green Trio. In 1998, he released his first solo work and the world begin to see the true McBride. Incorporating elements of funk, soul, pop, and pushing his sound further towards fusion, the expert McBride carved out a corner of his own in the international jazz racket. Since, he has put his wide range of expertise into playing, composing or arranging for people such as McCoy Tyner, James Brown, The Roots, D’Angelo and Chick Corea. Most recently, McBride has returned to a more traditional bop sound and is currently touring with the spectacular Inside Straight Quintet.

Personnel: Christian McBride (bass), Warren Wolf (vibes), Steve Wilson (sax), Ulysses Owens (drums) and Christian Sands (piano)

Laila Biali Trio (NYC)
jazz / pop

Laila Biali will be coming to this year’s festival on a whirlwind. After touring for two years with the likes of Chris Botti and Suzanne Vega, she touched down in Italy to work with Sting at his Tuscany estate, Il Palagio. How’s that for inspira- tion? Biali credits the ex-Police man for pushing her towards new heights of artistry on her most recent album, Tracing Light. That album received a JUNO nomination for its tasteful interpretation of tunes by k.d. lang, Frank Sinatra and Daniel Lanois, not to mention some fabulous originals. A decade on, this songstress has never sounded more inspired.

Personnel: Laila Biali (piano, vocals), George Koller (stand-up bass) and Larnell Lewis (drums)
